Flying With Lithium Batteries & Power Banks

When flying with lithium batteries, keep devices and spare batteries in carry-on bags only, protect spare batteries from short circuits (tape terminals/use cases), and check your airline's specific rules, especially for larger batteries (100-160 Wh), as some need approval; damaged batteries are forbidden, and anything over 160 Wh is generally banned, except for medical devices with special approval.

Key Rules for Lithium Batteries in Canada:

Carry-On Only: All spare lithium batteries (power banks) and most devices with them must go in carry-on luggage.

Protect Spares: Cover terminals with tape, use original packaging, or place batteries in individual protective cases to prevent short circuits.

Watt-Hour (Wh) Limits:

Under 100 Wh (Most Consumer Devices): Fine in carry-on; some airlines might allow in checked bags (verify with the airline first).

100 Wh to 160 Wh (Larger Devices/Batteries): Carry-on only, requires airline approval, max 2 spares.

Over 160 Wh: Generally prohibited, except for approved medical devices (like CPAPs) with advance notice.

Damaged Batteries: Never bring damaged, defective, or recalled batteries.

Check Your Airline: Policies vary, so always verify with your specific airline (Air Canada, Flair, Porter, etc.) before flying.

Remember: The main concern is fire. Keeping batteries in the cabin allows crews to manage incidents and protecting them prevents accidental ignition.
